Our staff of architects, project managers, site superintendents, accounts managers, and office managers are here to serve each client. We value our clients, their dreams and budgets. We start each project with a master plan and a detailed financial plan. We take the clients' dream and make it a financial and construction reality. Unlike typical projects in the construction industry, where detailed plans are prepared before cost estimates and pricing, our team of contractors, builders, managers and architects "price and budget" each trade of construction work as we prepare the initial thumbnail sketches. Very early in the process, typically in the first two week, we will prepare conceptual floor plans, site plans, elevations, and develop very comprehensive project estimates. Our vendors maintain quarterly unit price for our projects. Because of the large volume of our sales, those unit prices are set at 20% lower margin than the fair market rates. The resulting design is creative, and the resulting cost corresponds to the clients budget. After this initial planning exercise, we develop the detailed construction drawings and specifications, and start construction. During construction, we further develop and implement those details. We take pride in correlating the clients' dreams and wishes to their budget, while maintaining creativity and aesthetics. For our office and our clients, the design and building process is team work, where we work together to guide the technicians to create beautiful and functional "masterpieces of architecture."

These projects include medical and dental offices, veterinary hospitals, retail centers and restaurants, hotels and resorts, schools, city halls, churches and mosques, and custom homes. With certifications from NCARB, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, Alam Design can provide professional Architecture and Planning services in United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Our Architects and Builders are active members of the American Institute of Architects and the Home Builders Association. Mr. Husain Alam, AIA is the President of the "Blue Ridge Chapter" of the American Institute of Architects.
Mr. Husain B. Alam, AIA, NCARB, is the owner and President of our team. He is a licensed Architect and a Master Builder with 27 years of experience in design and construction systems. He has designed and built projects in United States, Europe, and Asia. Mr. Alam has a B.Arch from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and a M.S. in Architecture from Pennsylvania State University. Prior to starting his practice in 1998, Mr. Alam worked at SSP Architects in New Jersey, and Balzer and Associates in Virginia. He has also practiced Architecture in Poland, Turkey, and Pakistan. He is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Mr. Alam is currently licensed in Virginia, North Carolina, New York, Washington DC, and Maryland. With his leadership, diverse experience, and his unique ability to understand and serve the needs of our clients, we have become the "highly respected" design-build operation in southwest Virginia. Along with his love for Architecture, Mr. Alam's passion for marathon races, kayaking, hiking, skiing, and camping keeps him close to mother nature. He is an avid supporter of environmental sustainability.
Mr. Will Herrin, Associate AIA, LEED AP, is our lead commercial and residential designer, and Project Manager. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and received specialized training at Riva San Vitale, Switzerland in 2008. Mr. Herrin also worked at the "Washington Alexandria Architecture Center" in 2009. Along with his international experience, he has worked at the Architecture firm of Gilliam & Katz in Roanoke, Virginia until 2013. His passion to serve our clients while providing design excellence and construction sustainability is further inspired by his years of interaction with nature. Along with his talents in construction and design, Mr. Herrin is an avid Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, where he travelled from Maine to Georgia in 2011. He recently went on a biking expedition and cycled around Iceland. Such experiences inspire Mr. Herrin to integrate Architecture with the unique opportunities presented at each project site.
Mr. Jacob N. Geffert, Associate Architect, is an Architectural designer and Project Manager. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech. His interests are in the creative Architecture design and Energy efficiency. In addition to his education at Virginia Tech, he studied at the Chicago Studio in 2012, and participated in "travel abroad architecture studies in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy. He was also a member of the award winning Team of the "Farmers' Market project" in Covington, Virginia, where he was part of a design-build Virginia Tech team that created a beautiful modern structure using materials from an old warehouse building in Clifton Forge. He worked at Hughes Architects & Engineers in Roanoke from 2015 to 2016, and Blue Ridge Residential Construction Company/ Black Dog Salvage from 2014 to 2015. Jacob's creative and building interest/talents are extremely valuable to our design team. With his Architecture and construction background, and his passion for the sustainability, our residential and commercial projects are constantly improving sensitivity to the environment. Along with his passion for Architecture, he coaches high school sports.
Ms. Amina Oulmi is an Associate Architect and a project designer. She graduated with Bachelors in Architecture from Ecole Polytechnique D'architecture & Urbanisme in Algeries, Algeria in 1999. Amina has pervious work experience at Hughes Architects & Engineers, and SFCS, Inc. She is passionate about architectural design, product design, and customer service. As a former jewelry designer prior to her embracing the field of Architecture, she has traveled the world and displayed her jewelry at expositions in Spain and Egypt. Amina also works free lance as an interpreter for French and Arabic languages. Her clientele include foreign diplomats and business delegates. As a mother of two children, she enjoys the beautiful landscape of Southwest Virginia, and all it has to offer to our families.
Mr. Harold Keene, Superintendent/Project Manager, is our point guard for the construction operations. He implements the performance requirements set forth by the clients and the company management team. Mr. Keene monitors the daily progress of various vendors, subcontractors, and field technicians/superintendents. He specializes in excavation, advanced masonry, concrete, trim carpentry, framing, elevator installation, solar panel installation, and casework. Mr. Keene further specializes in implementation of building codes, OSHA regulations, residential and commercial construction details on site. His 35 years of professional experience includes working with Mr. Mark Henrickson of Henmark Construction in Salem, Jackson and Associates in Roanoke, Keene and Associates in Northern Virginia. Harold prefers to self perform excavation, concrete, framing, and trim work, wherever possible, in order to maintain the highest level of quality. In addition to his highly skilled construction background, Harold enjoys fishing, canoeing, hunting, and outdoor expeditions. Our customers are better served each day under his watchful eyes. While his family keeps him busy in the evenings and weekends, he is organizing and managing your jobs daily from sunrise to sunset, and maintaining the highest level of craftsmanship.
Mr. Blaine Bush, Richmond Branch Manager, oversees our construction operations in Richmond and Northern Virginia areas. He has been a Richmond resident for last 14 years and understands the construction market economics very well. Mr. Bush has an Associates degree in electronics from New River Community College. He started working at James T. Bush Custom Homes with his father in Blacksburg, VA in 1987, and expanded to Bush Construction in Richmond in 1998. He is highly experienced in projects ranging from small renovations to large scale additions and new construction. His decades of experience in remodeling historic buildings in the aging districts of Richmond makes him unique in our industry. He not only values the "historic fabric", but he knows how to protect it, and utilize it's merits in combination with the evolving charms of contemporary Architecture. Our northern Virginia and Richmond customers are fortunate to have his 27 years of experience guiding their construction projects.
Mrs. Brenda Boger, our Office Manager, has 40 years of experience in administration, accounting, and marketing. Over last 8 years in our office, she has been highly respected and liked by our clients and our vendors. She manages general accounting, customer service, punchlist, and warranty services. Her high "standard of care" has become the signature of our service to our clients. With her extra ordinary organization, hard work, and diligence, we are able to ensure "top notch service" on the job sites and in the office. She has raised her family in Northern Virginia and Southwest Virginia.
Mr. Chris Jakubowicz, director of our in-house construction operations, and our lead trim carpenter, moved with his family of four to the Roanoke Valley from North Carolina. His wife is a nurse and works for the Bedford Hospital. Mr. Jakubowicz has a B.S. in Biblical Studies from Bethel College, Mishawaka, Indiana, where he worked in the youth ministry. His construction career started in Denver, Colorado, where he learned the basics of construction under Sam King. He worked in Huntsville, Alabama, with Trimco for 3 years, before moving to Carolinas. His several years in Carolina managing his own business provided him the knowledge to create beautiful details in the "real world" realm of budget considerations. We have been fortunate to have his care, leadership, and keen eye for detail in the Roanoke and New River Valley for the last few years. His diverse experience in the past decades provides our customer a gifted and highly trained craftsman, whose "true calling" is to serve others via construction.
All our company's accounting is managed and Audited by Century Small Business, Mr. Pat Branes, CPA since 1998. Mr. Bob Swindell with Chas Lunsford and Associates has maintained our Architecture and construction Liability insurance policies, and Workman compensation insurance policies. We are very fortunate to have highly qualified and dedicated staff, team of consultants, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers for the past two decades. We salute our team for their hard work and dedication to each project. They make it all happen.
